Earth’s Satellite Constellations, Moon Bases, Martian Colonies, and the New Frontiers Program
It is the Earth that is the launch pad for the future of space, as we continue to push the boundaries of our capabilities and knowledge here on Earth. As the Earth becomes encircled by satellite constellations, Moon bases will evolve and Martian colonies will be attempted. Then there is NASA’s New Frontiers program, plus many missions coming as space becomes populated.
The Moon is our closest celestial neighbor. Countries around the globe are setting their sights on lunar exploration, thus fostering a spirit of shared scientific curiosity and collaboration.
A number of countries and private companies have missions planned for the Moon, including robotic landers, rovers, and orbiters. In the U.S., NASA’s Artemis program is a series of missions designed to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence there.
According to a NASA press release January 9, 2024, the Artemis program will: 1) establish the foundation for long-term scientific exploration at the Moon, 2) land the first woman and first person of color on the lunar surface and, 3) prepare for human expeditions to Mars for the benefit of all.
